Meals on Wheels is a community
service organization which
is affiliated with the
Lutheran Service Society.
Meals are provided for
those members of our
community who are unable to
get out of the house and go
to the grocery store or
cook for themselves. The
largest benefit from the
program is that it enables
the elderly to maintain
their independence as long
as possible and also
maintain better health
because of a nutritionally
balanced diet.
Meals on Wheels has
been a part of this
community for 30 years as
of June 1. The kitchen is
located in the English
Lutheran Church on High
Street in Zelienople. The
organization is run by
volunteers with one paid
staff, the cook, Judy
VonHedemann. Volunteers
pack the lunches and
deliver them to the
clients. Many of the
desserts and fruits are
donated by area churches.
This helps to keep costs to
a minimum and therefore the
meals are affordable for
those who are on a fixed
income. The cost to receive
meals is $17.00 per week.
That cost includes one hot
and one cold meal per day.
